Her humorous outlook both on herself and the elvish world kept me laughing through the pages. I felt she is pretty rare fictional example of a very real type of girl. What really makes this book work is our heroine. But I enjoyed the culture presented here, even if the elves did have some irritating issues over beauty. I love Tolkien's elves, and I generally find other elves in fantasy fall short to that measure. I'm really picky about how elves are handled in books. Such labors are worth attending." - New York Times "An extraordinary and rewarding read. Meitner's story is moving, and the book is clearly a labor of love. The several story lines of Meitner's life are carefully and smoothly interwoven, and once the war starts, the plot becomes breathtaking. The story, especially in the lead-up to the discovery of fission by Hahn, Meitner, and Strassman, is absolutely gripping, full of twists and false dawns." - New Scientist "Sime has produced a thorough and intelligent treatment of an extraordinary scientist who received little of the credit she is due." - Library Journal "The characters include the whole pantheon of European physicists. The short stories are awesome! The connecting bits of narrative aren’t so much. It’s a good idea, but it’s not executed very well. I like them to be all connected somehow, even if it’s just by theme, so at first I really liked the idea of a collection of short stories written by people at a writer’s retreat. All of which is to say, I’m pretty biased toward being a fan of anything Palahniuk does. I also point to Palahniuk as a way to say that vulgarity and horror do not equate to bad writing. To this day, I view the book (and the movie) as exemplary artforms that demonstrate how genre literature can say something incredibly serious and deep. Fight Club spoke to me when I was at my late teens most intense angst that is indescribable.
