Furthermore, that Albertano cites Gabriel as an outstanding rhetor informs Milton's repeated references to the archangel, with the result that the role of the poet may be seen as imitative of this divine messenger. The emergent character of the virtuous speaker accords entirely with Milton's portrayal of Jesus in Paradise Regained, while the evil speaker is in every point like Satan. Throughout both Peraldus and Albertano, emphasis on the virtues of silence and restrained speech reiterates monastically-oriented pronouncements by Benedict and Bernard. In particular, Peraldus's "De peccato linguae" (which comprises a kind of eighth deadly sin in his Summa de vitiis) seems to lie behind Albertano's discussion of the virtues and vices of speaking more than classical rhetorical works. The blank-verse poem in ten books appeared in 1667 a second edition, in which Milton reorganized the original ten books into twelve, appeared in 1674. While written by a secular for a secular audience, this treatise is analogous to discourses on the peccatum linguae (Sin of the Tongue) appearing in manuals on the Seven Deadly Sins. Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained For many years Milton had planned to write an epic poem, and he probably started his work on Paradise Lost before the Restoration. An interesting perspective on the rhetorical posture of Milton and Jesus in Paradise Regained results when this "brief epic" is viewed in light of Albertano da Brescia's mid-thirteenth-century De arte loquendi et tacendi. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Big Kids by Michael DeForgeThe Graphic Novels 3.0 Graphic Novels 3.1 Criticism of the Neologism 4. Over the course of her long career, Heyer transformed the conventions of the genre, popularizing the society-set romance in which the central struggle in a relationship between the two main characters (in Heyer’s case, always a man and a woman) often revolved around the tensions of searching for love in an era when dynastic marriages were still expected. Historical romance writers today are in constant conversation with the world that Heyer created. Her historical world-building was unique in its approach and application, and was imitated even in her lifetime. Although she was an avid researcher, particularly when a subject interested her, she nevertheless invented a world full of aristocratic dandies and feisty heroines having adventures in the ballrooms and pleasure gardens of Regency England. 1 But Heyer’s fiction never reflected the realities of life in Regency England. From 1921 to 1972, Heyer published thirty-seven romances set in the Georgian or Regency eras. Georgette Heyer is widely considered to be the pioneer of the Regency romance. It’s hard not to praise Lansdale, who I think is one of the best writers in the field today he can write the most uproariously ribald humor, and a few pages later can break into powerful, heartbreaking emotion. For Mercer, the last of the Lord’s many tests is a final showdown between good and evil… Or perhaps a showdown between shades of gray, as Mercer is far from pure himself, and the shaman was innocent of all crimes save for the color of his skin. The gunslinger-preacher finds himself riding into the dusty town of Mud Creek, in hopes of holding an old-time revival.
